Dr. Jack MacDonald served as head coach of the scarlet and red from 1965 through 1967. Jack received support from fellow coach Hunter "Doc" Davis and helped shape the athletic careers of hundreds of athletes including Andy Maros, George Lauderbaugh and Joe Carroll.

Jack currently lives in Baltimore, MD with his wife and watches his grandsons play soccer in local leagues. He wrote to us recently and recalled some of his great memories:

My most fond memories were the relationships with players that I had good fortune to coach..We did not have a lot of super players but we had players who wanted to play and become a member of the starting squads to play for D&E. When I coached the team new teams were coming into the league such as A-B and Morris Harvey (Univ.of Charleston). We were not successful in the won or loss column but we upgraded the schedule playing West Virginia University, Slippery Rock Washington and Lee. In those days we had a number of soccer players who also were on other teams like Andy Maros,George Lauderbaugh, Tom and Ed Jones who were members of the swimming team.

Elizabeth Miller (nee Barnes)('01) spent a year in Greg Mitchell's system after competing on the Elkins High School women's team. Liz recalls a time when "Loveland and Jess stopped me from getting in a fight with the opposing coach, it was soo funny after the fact. We talked about it forever." We hope to see Liz at the 2006 Reunion.

Kevin MacGabhann('93) lives in the small mountain village of Saverne, in the Alsace region of France with his wife, Anne, and daughter, Sarah. Fit and full of Gaelic hymns, Kevin spends the majority of his time playing for FC ERNOLSHEIM, a local soccer club that hosted several lads from D&E glory in a friendly match after the wedding. Kevin scored one of the goals to lead the ³Rest of the World² team to victory! He has challenged all of his teammates to a World Cup Futsal tournament in Germany this summer. The loser has to sing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" naked in front of the Irish Embassy. Any takers?

Doug Miller('87) works for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL), and is eager to re-connect with old teammates and friends from the past.

Stavros Manolakos('99) came to D&E on scholarship from his home in Greece and was the teamıs leading goal scorer during his last three seasons. An outstanding finisher, Stavros scored over thirty goals in his career and is among the leaders in goals behind Jason Gatt and David "Tiny" Archibald.

Andy Maros('64) traveled back to Elkins for the first time in decades and was aglow with fond memories and stories of days past. A native of Hungary, Andy came to the U.S. during the Kennedy years and helped inspire other Senators who were new to the sport of soccer. A star midfielder, Andy now enjoys playing jazz as a trumpeter in several groups just outside his home in Denver. Andy's rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" on flugelhorn prior to the kickoff of the 2001 Greyhound Cup at the Harpertown Athletic Complex was incredibly moving and a fantastic start to the match, which was played in tribute to Doc Davis and the late Joe Carroll.

Dr. Tom Martin('71) is one of the nation's best collegiate soccer coaches. With over 24 years in coaching, Tom has amassed an incredible record of 341-101-35 (.752). Currently, Tom is head coach of the men's program at James Madison University. He ranks among the winningest active NCAA Division I coaches by percentage (fourth, 75.2%) and victories (seventh, 341). Tom coached the West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats to back-to-back National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championships in 1984 and 1985. He was named NAIA national Coach of the Year in 1982, 1984 and 1985 and was honored as national Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 1984 and 1985.

As a D&E Senator, Tom was a two-time team MVP and earned WVIAC all-conference honors, when he played on two NAIA national champion teams (1968 and 1970) and the national runner-up team (1969). In 1972, Martin earned a tryout with the NASL Dallas Tornado, and in 1973 he played with the Pittsburgh Miners of the ASL. Martin earned a master's degree in professional physical education (1974) and a doctorate in physical education (1977) from West Virginia University. He also holds a USSF "A" coaching license.

Pat Massa('71) was a member of the 1968 and 1970 NAIA National Championship teams with Nils, Bill, Scotty and Hank. Formerly coach of the York College men's soccer team, Pat has retired from the collegiate ranks and spends time with his family in Pennsylvania. He also serves as Parliamentarian for FOSS.

Ian McDonald('86) has been at the head of soccer operations for the Washington & Jefferson College (PA) menıs soccer team for over ten seasons. A native of Newcastle, England, Ian arrived on campus in 1982 to solidify the back line for coach Nils Heinke. During his four years, Ian was named a NCAA Division II First Team All-American, an All-south Regional All-American, a 1985 West Virginia All-Conference Selection, and was D&E's 1983 Player's Player of the Year selection. He was named the 1985 West Virginia Conference MVP and was selected to the Budweiser Indoor Senior Bowl All-East Team in 1986.

Bill Mead('87) is a mortgage loan officer for Sun Trust Bank in Front Royal, Va., and enjoys the occasional shake of the boot in local co-ed leagues. He fondly remembers scoring a goal against the University of Tampa in the 1986 NCAA national tournament, and many of the antics that Anders, Archie and Christie led during his years. "Buff" has been instrumental in the organizational development of FOSS and has served as Treasurer since 2002. If you need help with your mortgage or seek a lower interest rate, contact our man in Virginia. Buff lives in Front Royal with his spouse, Julia, and son, Baird.

Gregory Mitchell('95) is the assistant women's soccer coach at Youngstown State University (OH). Mitch and his wife, Nikki, welcomed their first child, Landon, to the world in February 2006. Prior to re-locating to YSU, Mitch helped start the women's soccer program at D&E and lead the women to four successful seasons between 2000-04. He was a standout goalkeeper for the Senators between 1991-95 and is among the leaders in saves, save percentage, and wins in school history.

Jessica Motes('06) Coming Soon!

Donald MacGregor('07) Donnie is currently in Europe pursuing a professional soccer career. We know he has the tools and ambition to make it - let's hope he does and represents D&E in the international soccer world soon enough. Good luck, D-Mac!

Bill Murphyplayed with Conn Davis in the mid-seventies, called to wish everyone well and hopes to make it down next year. He can be reached at (914) 855-5870.

Dr. Greg Myers lead D&E to two NAIA National Championships in 1968 and 1970, and a second place finish in the NAIAs in 1969. Admired and respected by coaches and players nationally, Dr. Myers retired as coach of the men's program at the United States Naval Academy. He compiled 208-160-5 record over 26 seasons at the Academy and is among the top 20 coaches in NCAA history with the wins (307). Oddly enough, he joins former D&E coaches Fred Schmaltz and Dr. Tom Martin on the all-time winningest coaches in NCAA history. A 1963 graduate of West Virginia University, Myers coached WVU to back-to-back Southern Conference championships in 1965 and 1966, before journeying south to Elkins to begin the Senators' unmatchable dynasty. During Greg's time with D&E, he amassed a 39-2-4 record and guided his teams to its best run in history. Greg departed D&E for Florida International University where he complied a 30-8-3 record. In 1976, he was appointed coach of the Miami Toros of the NASL and led them to the semi-finals of the league championship.
