2003 Alumni Weekend - April 11-13, 2003

order the CDFour generations of D&E soccer convened on campus during the weekend of April 11-13, 2003 to listen and tell stories about one of the institution's greatest coaches of all-time, Fred Schmalz. Over 130 guests made their way to Elkins for the roast and soccer matches. John Caracciolio and his wife, Olga, travelled from their home in Yerevan, Armenia to salute Schmalz and his wife, Linda. Floris DeKlerk hopped on a plane bound for Washington, DC from his home outside of Madrid, Spain! Luckily for us, Floris was able to see the reigning world club champions dismantle Manchester United in the quarterfinals of the 2003 UEFA Champions League on Tuesday!

order the CDFor Schmalz, this was a unique experience to re-connect with many former players, coaches and administrators who supported the St. Louis native during his seven years in West Virginia. "I wouldn't miss this for the world!", said Ed MacFarlane, former Athletic Director during Schmalz's tenure. "My wife and I know Fred and Linda very well and we haven't been able to see them in years. For all of us, this is a unique event and one which we wouldn't miss!" ["Up Close with Fred Schmalz"]

Schmlaz, 59, recently retired as head coach of the University of Evansville squad, where he compiled an impressive 302-165-49 in 24 years at the university. Schmalz's teams competed in the NCAA Division I tournament 11 times, most recently in 1996 when the Purple Aces compiled an 18-5-0 record, won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, and finished 20th in the final national poll. Moreover, Schmalz was chosen as the 1996 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. Read more at "Up Close with Fred Schmalz."
