Lifetime Achievement Awardees

Since 2001, Friends of Senator Soccer Association has bestowed a total of eight Lifetime Achievement Awards to former D&E players and coaches, including members of the 1968 & 1970 NAIA National Championship teams, that have uniquely and uncharacteristically devoted their personal and professional lives to the advancement and evolution of the sport of soccer.

Lifetime Achievement Awardees are nominated and selected by the members of FOSS each year based on a series of criteria that exemplifies the individual's character, personal attributes, and genuine love of both sport and alma mater. All of the individuals and teams listed below are distinguished in their own special way, and are recognizably, true pioneers of D&E soccer.

Dr. S. Hunter "Doc" Davis, 2001
Doc Davis is the grandfather of D&E Soccer and the program's first true coach. Not only did he clear pastures and line pitches, but he inspired his players to learn the teachings of Plato, Aristotle, and Shakespeare. Dr. Davis was honored in 2001 by FOSS for his many contributions to the D&E Men's Soccer Team and was joined in Elkins by several of his former players including Jim Bushyeager, David Clapp, Gary Horvath, George Lauderbaugh, and Andy Maros for a fitting tribute to the godfather of D&E soccer.

2006 Men's Team Dr. Gregory S. Myers, 2002
Greg Myers helped establish D&E as a national soccer powerhouse during his four years at the helm, 1967-71. Regarded as one of the NCAA's All-Time Great Coaches, Myers retired from coaching in 2005 and was honored by FOSS and Friends of Navy Soccer in a moving ceremony on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

2006 Men's Team Fred Schmalz, 2003
Fred Schmalz continued the great traditions established by Greg Myers and led D&E to countless appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. Over the course of seven years, Schmalz led the Senators to a 91-21-5 record and six consecutive trips to the NAIA Final Four. By recruiting international players with significant experience and technical ability, Schmalz's inspirational coaching style and witticism allowed the legacy of soccer excellence to continue and help shape a memorable seven years in the mountains.

2006 Men's Team Nils Heinke, 2004
Nils Heinke is one of the greatest defenders ever to don the Scarlet & White silks for D&E. A native of Santiago, Chile, Heinke left his home in South America and journeyed north to the U.S. only to meet some of the greatest friends and his future wife at our alma mater.

2006 Men's Team Kendall Walkes, 2005
Known affectionately to his friends and family as "Toombs", Walkes received the 2005 FOSS Lifetime Achievement Award in Annapolis, Maryland alongside another D&E legend, Dr. Greg Myers. Walkes was honored in 2005 as the NSCAA National Youth Coach of the Year and is currently Head Coach of the West Chester University Men's Soccer Team.

Conn Davis Conn Davis, 2006
Conn Davis received the 2006 FOSS Lifetime Achievement Award in Elkins alongside his brother, Glenn Davis. Conn was a three-time All-WVIAC selection and two-time NSCAA All-South & All-American. During his tenure as the Senators goalkeeper, he never lost a home match and recorded a record 22 saves en route to a stunning 2-1 victory over Howard University.

Glenn Davis Glenn Davis, 2006
Alongside his older brother, Conn, Glenn Davis jointly received the 2006 FOSS Lifetime Achievement Award. Glenn was a two-time All-WVIAC selection and NAIA All-American. Glenn played professionally for six years after college and can be seen announcing soccer matches on ABC, ESPN, Fox, and HDNET.

Dr. Tom Martin Dr. Tom Martin, 2007
Dr. Tom Martin, Class of '71, received the 2007 FOSS Lifetime Achievement Award in Elkins, WV during the annual FOSS Reunion Weekend on October 12-14, 2007. Tom's coaching and playing career are beyond what most can imagine and deserve ample credos for what he has been to accomplish on and off the field.

National Champions: 1968 & 1970 Members Members of the 1968 & 1970 NAIA National Championship teams, including Head Coach Dr. Greg Myers, were honored by the D&E athletic community and FOSS as the co-recipients of the 2008 FOSS Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations to all of the players and Coach Myers for their historic accomplishments.
